Dynamic Island for Lyrics: The Most Native Music Experience on iPhone
Dynamic Island isn't just for calls and timers. Here's how Lyrical uses Live Activities to surface real-time lyrics in the most native iPhone UI ever designed.
What makes Dynamic Island special
Dynamic Island was Apple's answer to the notch. Instead of hiding the hardware behind a black hole, they turned it into an interactive zone. It expands. It reacts. It shows you real-time information from apps without taking over your screen.
When it launched with iPhone 14 Pro, developers could plug into it via Live Activities — a new API that let apps push real-time data to this special region of the screen.
Lyrical was one of the first apps to use this for lyrics.
How it works
When you start playing a song in Apple Music and Lyrical is running, it begins a Live Activity session. This session sends the current lyric line to the Dynamic Island at precisely the right moment in the song.
The result: as you listen, the Dynamic Island shows your current lyric. It updates every few seconds as the song progresses. It's subtle, ambient, and completely native — it feels like iOS itself is singing along with you.
The expanded view
Tapping the Dynamic Island expands it into a larger panel. In Lyrical's expanded view, you see more lyric context — the previous line, the current line (highlighted), and the next line. You also see the album art, song name, and playback controls.
This expanded view closes automatically and doesn't interrupt what you're doing. It's designed for a quick glance, not for navigation.
Why this matters for listeners
Before Live Activities, there was no elegant way to see your current lyric without opening the app. You could check your phone screen — but that's the app. There was no ambient, always-visible option.
Dynamic Island solves this. It's tiny, but it's persistent. You can glance at the corner of your screen, catch the current lyric line, and go back to whatever you were doing. It's a fundamentally better way to stay connected to the music without being pulled into it.
Requirements
Dynamic Island support requires iPhone 14 Pro or later. If you have an older device, Lyrical still surfaces lyrics on the Lock Screen via Live Activities — you just won't have the Dynamic Island bar itself.
All of this is part of the base Lyrical app. No additional setup required.
